- Summary:
- In the Nordeste, the twin cities of Recife (a bustling metropolis) and Olinda (a jewel of colonial heritage) pride themselves on organizing the country's most popular carnival every year. It’s a street carnival where improvisation is king, as opposed to the parades in Rio parades and the circuits in Salvador. Alceu Valença, a superstar whose concerts attract tens of thousands of partygoers, is our guide in this frenzy of rhythms: frevo, which tests the virtuosity of the dancers; maracatu, which accompanies Afro-Brazilian worship; not to mention Mangue Beat, a fusion of rap, rock, and maracatu created by Chico Science in the 1990s. The collision of rural traditions and urban chaos causes the explosion captured in this documentary, even if, as Alceu Valença concludes, nothing beats going there to participate in this pure madness.
