- Summary:
- One of the great trumpeters in an era of top notch horn men, Charles Tolliver originally established himself in the mid-60’s with such iconic figures as Jackie McLean and Horace Silver. By the 1970s he was leading his own quartet, Music Inc., and had established the Strata-East record label with pianist Stanley Cowell. The following three decades found him off the U.S. scene, but he returned, revitalized, by the new millennium. This 2014 performance finds the septuagenarian trumpeter at the helm of a quintet manned by enthusiastic younger players including the pianist Theo Hill, the bassist Devin Starks, the drummer Gene Jackson and the guitarist Bruce Edwards. Blowing with much of the vigor and invention that gained him notice years before, Tolliver proved that he was a legendary figure still worthy of attention. Steve Futterman
