Summary:
An economic center where the opulence of the wealthy districts coexists with the poverty of the favelas, São Paulo does not have the cultural roots of Rio, Salvador, or Recife. This characteristic explains why the megalopolis was conducive to the emergence of expression from the outside. In the 1990s, hip-hop attracted brilliant followers in each of its disciplines: rap, breakdance, and graffiti. "We don't want to be Americans, we have our own style," stressed the pioneers, including the rapper Thaíde, to whom this documentary gives the floor, with all the more impact because it was shot in the middle of the movement's boom. Torn between urban pulsation and the rural traditions of the Nordeste immigrants (baião, repente), Brazilian rap was popularized by the group Racionais MC's, whose leader, Mano Brown, said he was only about twenty years old at the time: "Rap is the music of the favelas, the ghettos, and those who live there always have a good reason to complain." Those are strong words that continue to resonate, even twenty years later. Delhaye
