- Summary:
- American trumpeter gets post-Miles groove on. With his loose flowing tee, baggy shorts and turban, Josef Leimberg cuts quite a dash on stage. Having made a vital contribution to Kendrick Lamarr’s modern day masterpiece *To Pimp A Butterfly* the Los Angeles-based trumpeter and producer is well regarded by millions in the hip-hop nation. He is also an intrepid musical adventurer in his own right who likes to roam through the whole history of jazz and improvised music, as he showed on his acclaimed 2018 debut *Astral Progressions*. Leimberg is a skilled soloist who phrases with great attention to detail, and he also knows how to compose and arrange material that draws intelligently on the lexicon of ‘70s fusion. This engrossing performance from his working band has a distinct post-*Bitches Brew* flavour, with creeping funk-rock grooves, sensual Indian drones, and flickering passages of dub that create mysterious, skulking, often enticing moods.
