Summary:
Gonzalo Rubalcaba had introduced himself to the Munich audience four years earlier. Here, he returns with an enticing line-up that features Brazilian songs and Caribbean accents alongside purely jazz standards. Nevertheless, the trio remains very jazzy in its style. Gonzalo Rubalcaba's unassuming virtuosity is its backbone. He moves seamlessly from an introspective mood of calm and sensuality, with a light touch and evanescent notes, to quick, percussive strokes. So we sail from the suave swing of "How Deep Is The Ocean" to the vitality of "Algo Bueno," the percussive contrasts of "Caravan" (the theme of Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol, who was a long-time member of Duke Ellington's orchestra), and the evasive daydream of "Samba de Orfeu." He's got legendary Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa by his side; born in 1953, the percussionist has also collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, and Kip Hanrahan. Philippe Lesage
