- Summary:
- "With him take care of myself, I drink herbal tea, and I’m enchanted." As the son of planters from the highlands of Reunion Island, Danyèl Waro remains the symbolic vwa player of the electric and militant Mayola music. This ternary blues form was originally inherited from former slaves and Waro acts as a proud flagbearer of the style, brandishing it as the soul of Réunionese Creole. Its sound is carried by the incandescent pulse of roulèr, kayambs and pikèr percussion styles, and Waro deploys its melancholic poetry through Aou Amwin (from you to me). An essential disc and a superb transoceanic link, it invites us to experience the mystic soundwaves of the bobre musical bow and Alain Péters’ talismanic takamba, as well as the Gnawa mbira and karkabas. While he sings a capella, the audience at L’Alhambra holds their breath … before abandoning themselves to the dance as Waro levitates them higher, in a trance. Jeanne Lacaille
