- Summary:
- This film reveals the Chicagoan post-rock pioneers in an unfamiliar light, performing a special set at the Sons d’Hiver festival in Paris, 2013. Always arms-open to jazz, minimalism, ambient and modern classical forms, Tortoise appear at Maison des Arts in southern suburb Créteil with an augmented line-up featuring fellow Windy City flutist Nicole Mitchell, plus a crew of French jazz and improvising players. Guitarist Julien Desprez, trumpeter Aymeric Avice and reedsman Antonin-Tri Hoang are here caught early on in their careers. Atmospherics grow into horn-theme ascensions, moving from tranquility to incandescent miasma. The music grips throughout, with its continuing evolution of textures, eventually introducing scaly electronics. Drums are doubled and keyboards are multiplied. This is a very valuable opportunity to witness Tortoise in a collaborative jazz state. As a further bonus, poet-rappers Saul Williams and Mike Ladd open the show with their riveting verbal face-off, flying from smoldering to enraged. Martin Longley
