Summary:

Since “Eu Vim da Bahia,” the 1965 song covered by Elis Regina and later by João Gilberto, Gilberto Gil has traveled many paths: from the world of politics (his exile in London in 1970 and appointment as Lula’s Minister of Culture) to Brazilian popular song, whose frontiers he expanded by incorporating new elements like rock, reggae, and Afro-Brazilian music from Bahia. This is Gil’s last tour, a man born in 1942 whose voice and health are beginning to decline, and who, for his final show, chose to share the stage with his children and grandchildren (Flor is very charming). It’s a pure delight to hear him play “Expresso 2222” and “Viramundo” in concert again as he takes the audience on a journey through his musical repertoire. Honoring his Northeastern roots (paying tribute to Jackson do Pandeiro), he performs numerous samba and bossa nova tracks including “Upa Neguinho,” a radical cover of “The Girl from Ipanema,” and revisits the essential tropicália period with “Não Chore Mais,” his version of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry.” As he launches into the encore “Aquele Abraço,” tears and memories begin to well up and the feeling of having grown old together weighs heavily on the author of these lines.
