Summary:
One of the most influential alto saxophonists of his generation, Miguel Zenón has been recognized as a salient improviser, gifted composer and jazz visionary. He has been nominated for Grammy Awards multiple times and in 2008 became a fellow of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation that stated, "This young musician and composer is at once reestablishing the artistic, cultural, and social tradition of jazz while creating an entirely new jazz language for the 21st century." Steeped in the jazz tradition, Zenón integrates the rich, diverse, heterogeneous heritage of his Puerto Rican folkloric background, telling me, "There’s a folk element in my music that is very powerful … It’s coming from the generations. It’s something that came from the earth." For this featured performance at 2014’s Lotus Jazz Festival in Poland, the 37-year-old Zenón led his quartet that he helmed for more than 15 years — Venezuelan pianist Luis Perdoma, Austrian bassist Hans Glawisching and fellow Puerto Rican drummer Henry Cole — in a fiery and soulful set that captivated the audience.
