Summary:

Simply entitled "The Meeting," this top-level encounter between two high-flying pianists begins with a few scattered notes that seem to float in the air in an aerial ballet, building a silence punctured by the jolts of the American and Austrian who look each other straight in the eye, like two lovers on a public bench. On the face of it, there is hardly any silence in this 1982 concert performed during the Munich Summer Piano Festival. And yet, the whole performance is based on it. Because the notes barely mask the silence: on the contrary, they marry it, reveal it, reminding us how music cannot exist without quiet. A Bergmanian encounter after the fact ("Cries and Whispers"), the dialogue is punctuated by crescendos, decrescendos, and piano tracks that don't obscure the two artists' jazz roots. Friedrich Gulda has scattered his scales between jazz and classical while Chick Corea has never hidden his attraction for the great music of princes. The varied and diverse repertoire spans the second half of the 19th century and the 20th century, including "Poem No. 3" by Australian pianist and jazz composer Fritz Pauer and a Disney standard revisited with American composer Frank Churchill’s famous "Someday My Prince Will Come," before delivering its final chords on a song by German master Johannes Brahms.
