Summary:
A major figure in French rap for over 25 years, the Guadeloupean singer-songwriter returns for his latest album J'Rap Encore in 2018 on the Zenith stage in Paris. The setting is dark, bass lines thump, black-clad dancers raise their fists in a closed fist as the drums explode and the lights zap the track. The choreography blends military steps and jerky movements. The tone is set: the fight goes on. All fades out, a red beam illuminates Kery James on the front of the stage, a beret decorated with the red star. He opens the set with his flagship track: “J'Rap Encore”. A conscious, committed and denunciatory rap track with a modern, almost trap-like instrumental section. He is joined on stage by OGB and Teddy Corona, who accompany him for most of the show. For the second song, entitled PDM, Kalash Criminel joins Kery James, and together they evoke searingly topical themes: the United States and racism (with the recent death of George Floyd) or the disappearance of Adama Traoré in 2016 in France. The guests include Féfé from Saïan Supa Crew, Juliette Fievet, Toma, and the We Are One choir. Accompanied by Pierre Belleville on drums, DJ Mosko on turntables, and Emmanuel Trouvé on keyboards, Kery James delivers a truly captivating performance. True to himself and his conscious rap, the artist who first appeared on an MC Solaar album at the age of 13 and formed his group Ideal J (co-founded with the late DJ Mehdi) in the 90s, continues to relentlessly denounce the major ills of our societies.
