Summary:
If there is one artist you might say never restricts themselves in order to keep their free imagination governed by opportunity, it would be Chick Corea. He goes from performing solo piano concerts (sparingly) to shows with jazz fusion groups. Here, he presents his acoustic trio, a sort of inverted mirror of the Elektric Band (a quintet also including both John Patitucci and Dave Weckl). If it weren't for a freedom in the playing, the program would seem pretty classic: Chasin' The Trane; How Deep Is The Ocean; On Green Dolphin Street; Sophisticated Lady; but isn't it by standards that we ultimately measure a musicians' creativity? Two movements from the album Three Quartets are perfect for the trio (long and intense developments; beautiful solos on the double bass, sometimes with a bow). A version of Spain (delivered as an encore) is strikingly open and strays from an insistence on the central motif. Exceptional art. Philippe Lesage
