- Summary:
- Watching this concert, which is both anecdotal and informative, immediately reminds us of Laurent de Wilde, author of the book Les fous du son [The Madmen of Sound]. During a conversation, Joe Zawinul told him that his first wish had been to use synthesizers as new instruments in order to move away from the classic combination at the time of trumpet, trombone, and saxophone. He added that he preferred block chords and never approached these keyboards as a pianist. This concert, which comes at a time when Zawinul has ended the group Weather Report, is enlightening in that we see him groping and imposing unexpected developments in order to boost his signature groove. However, the concert remains trivial because it looks more like a workshop with no real musical progression than a controlled performance, and the use of the vocoder is particularly kitschy. Having said that, the groove, the moods, and the intermingling of melodic elements are undeniably reminiscent of Weather Report, which Joe Zawinul had put together. Philippe Lesage
