- Summary:
- In his introduction to the public, Michel Portal explained, "I'm playing with Hamid for the first time. When we introduced ourselves, he told me he was American and a little African; I told him I was a little African and Basque. And we got along well, so we could go towards a little improvised music." The budding friendship is revealed before our eyes in smiles and laughter, blossoming in a festive finale. Hamid Drake is an outstanding percussionist whose playing is largely based on Ed Blackwell's singing and dancing. He is an emblematic figure of improvised music and is in no way disoriented by Portal's unique approaches, whose inner rhythms he easily anticipates. Portal’s fluid personality pushes the limits with such a disarming simplicity that what could have been the arid music of an awkward duo is anything but. Philippe Lesage
