- Summary:
- The legendary Carl Craig, a pioneer among Detroit techno producers, celebrated Black History Month this past February in partnership with Qwest TV and in support of the music education project Bridges For Music. This was the opportunity to commemorate the African diaspora from a highly symbolic place: Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, South Africa. A veritable living museum of the country's historical movement towards democracy, Constitution Hill is a former prison in which personalities such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were imprisoned, and which now houses the Constitutional Court which defends the rights of all citizens. This is where Carl Craig set up his turntables for this DJ set in which he subtly mixes African percussion with techno beats, and house atmospheres with legendary figures like James Brown and Fela Kuti. As with his always creative and innovative label Planet E, he shows through his mixes the major influence of African rhythms not only on Afro-American music, jazz, soul and many others, but also on techno and house. Carl Craig says: “It is a great honor to return to South Africa and perform in the homeland of my ancestors. The music that I have been making, producing and performing for 30 years is a tribute and the continuity of what was born in Africa, it flows through my veins here in Detroit. » Etienne Geremia
