- Summary:
- Benares (also called Varanasi) is a sacred city, leading pilgrimage site, and crossroads of Indian cultures that celebrates the divine even in the ultimate vibrations of its fluvial and musical traditions. The Ganges—a deeply spiritual river—is revealed here as the scene of striking performances by artists who are completely devoted to the refinement and transmission of the classical repertoire of Hindustani music. In this film, Yves Billon's camera sets off under the protection of Sarasvati, goddess of musicians, to drift alongside the famous Girija Devi with her time-embroidered songs, the master of tablas, Lacchu Maharaj, and Ustad Bismillah Khan, an eminent shehnai player whose highly inspired ragas and free improvisation supposedly inspired John Coltrane's jazz.
