- Summary:
- The episodic hip TV show New Orleans Live features the latest and greatest music that makes the city come alive on a regular basis. Recorded in front of a live audience at Generations Hall, this 2016 experience is like a variety show where the featured artists perform one song at a time, then reappear throughout, interspersed with short interviews. The captivating vocalist Robin Barnes, fondly known as the songbird of New Orleans, sings a few soulful, bluesy tunes that includes a beauty, “Later Gator” buoyed with the admonishing chorus, “I don’t need no alligators in my backyard.” Also in the show a fine song by r&b jazzer Tonya Boyd-Cannon. Lafayette native Roddie Romero on wicked guitar and percussive accordion leads his sextet The Hub City All-Stars in a rollicking collection of tunes that are steeped in rock, zydeco, French music, greasy blues and boogie woogie. They are certainly the revelation of this show. Born in the swamps of band’s southern Louisiana roots, the three-time Grammy nominated band cranks it up with guest Derek Huston on rousing baritone saxophone. The star of hourlong show is the rollicking r&b jam band Dumpstaphunk, known as the best funk band in New Orleans. Formed by Neville Brothers organist Ivan Neville in 2003 to get a slot in the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the band went on to make it a prime representative worldwide of the dance-heavy history of the city. Fresh grooves make the show a hit. Dan Ouellette
