Summary:
When Dan Berglund (double bass) and Magnus Oström (drums), the rhythm section of the EST Trio, orphaned for more than a decade by its leader the pianist Esbjörn Svensson, sets up a new trio with Bugge Wesseltoft, one wonders what will be the new alchemical precipitate and who will be, in fact, the thinking head of the Rymden Trio, a term which means "space" in Swedish. Democracy seems to have settled in without a hitch since each member signs compositions for their album Reflections & Odysseys (performed on this program), music that will ramble through the sounds of intergalactic jazz, combining electronic sounds and an acoustic universe (in a few rare passages one is reminded of Keith Jarrett’s touch), all coated with a progressive rock energy. The trio was recently created and the concert was one of the first given after the release of the album. We can say that the Norwegian, Bugge Wesseltoft, who has acquired a certain notoriety with his New Concept Of jazz training and in the field of Nu Jazz, so characteristic of the Scandinavian musical universe of the last decades, found his bearings smoothly with his accomplices in the rhythm section. All the keyboards are present to respond to the quest for colors. The double bass and drums solos are breathtaking. Philippe Lesage
