Summary:
Completely original, the Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp is indicative of a dynamic French-speaking scene. Like Cyril Cyril's cousins from Geneva, the group cultivates an obvious taste for the Dada compositions of Hugo Ball (one of the creators of the legendary Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich), the motorik rhythms of Can, Neu! and Faust, or even the different Afro-urban tendencies of the day. Invited to the most recent edition of the Cosmo Jazz Festival, the band confirms this with a captivating set. Led by double bassist Vincent Bertholet, the twelve members of the Orchester Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp start with the climatic “Patience,” impose an unreal up-tempo rhythm with “Empty Skies,” and transform it all with the aptly named “Blow.” Strong point of the group, the rhythm is carried by an unprecedented acoustic instrumentation and by an astonishing use of the marimba. This particularism is perceptible with "Beginning" and especially with the aerial "We Can Can We,” whose notes marry the surrounding peaks. Surprising and highly creative, this Swiss (underground…) group is an integral part of the Bongo Joe system, in other words an independent label coupled with a newly renovated record store. Fans take note… Vincent Caffiaux
