Summary:
A programme broadcast on the Franco-German channel Arte, Ground Control is a saving grace. This unique show breaks with the usual TV format in the diversity of its programme, ranging from Hollie Cook to The Jesus And Mary Chain and Angel Bat Dawid. Dawid, an American clarinetist and keyboardist who first gained recognition thanks to the label and cultural potpourri International Anthem, pairs her undeniably Chicagoan musical heritage with an educational mission. Invited on the show by composer and host Christophe Chassol, Dawid makes an immediate impression with her sober arrival on stage. Influenced by blues but also electronic sounds, she radiates an element of mystery. This is confirmed by the superb musical creation that follows: an improvisation of vintage keyboards, Auto-Tune and clarinet that earns a thunderous applause from the audience. It naturally evokes the ethereal music of Sun Ra, but also the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a non-profit organization and collective dedicated to Afro-American jazz. Punctuated by an interview where Dawid reveals her passion for classical music, particularly Mozart, this set ends, as it began, with a strikingly authentic and hypnotic track: highly recommended.
