- Summary:
- In 1984, the powerful pianist Oscar Peterson performed one of his greatest works, the nine-movement Easter Suite with his steady trio mates, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Martin Drew. Commissioned by the South Bank Show, the popular British weekly arts television show, Easter Suite tells the story of Jesus Christ’s last days of tragedy, passion, sorrow and ultimately the spiritual “he is risen” end of the story. While Peterson never recorded Easter Suite, the masterpiece was so popular that it was repeated for several years on Good Friday. Peterson leads his band through dance waltzes, blues vibes, chorale and sacred/spiritual music. The compositions expand and contract depending on the narration as the trio delivers dynamic, powerful, swinging music. What’s remarkable about this video is the introduction section by host Melvyn Bragg who questions Peterson and the band about the creative process in putting the suite together. It’s a fascinating 15-minute interview that is then followed by the 35-minute Easter Suite. The Bravo network broadcast the South Bank Show in the U.S. but omitted the informative interview.
