Summary:
Emile Parisien's concerts are never an easy, gentle ride, and that's what gives them their charm. Here, the musician performs with his Franco-American sextet Louise. Louise is also the title of the album he recently recorded with trumpeter Theo Crocker, bassist Joe Martin, drummer Nasheet Waits, pianist Roberto Negro and guitarist Manu Codjia, and “Louise” also happens to be the opening track of this concert. Behind this seemingly arbitrary first name lies a tribute to the visual artist Louise Bourgeois, whose favorite subjects were manifestations of the subconscious, eroticism and the reactivation of memories; themes that were bound to spark creativity among musicians. This concert evokes the history of jazz, between collective improvisation (Ornette Coleman comes to mind) and melancholy moments where Crocker's rounded sound recalls that of his predecessors. It's always unexpected, its wild dimension blending with an intense swing without overshadowing the melodic qualities. Three tracks stand out: “Madagascar,” an innovative reinterpretation of the piece by Joe Zawinul, and “Jojo,” a composition by Emile Parisien dedicated to Joachim Kühn, the German pianist he reveres. Finally, Crocker's “Prayer for Peace” is an incredibly beautiful track. Philippe Lesage
