Summary:
On July 7, 2018 the Jazz a Vienne Festival played host to modern hip-hop legends Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli. Together they made up Black Star, the acclaimed duo once credited with pulling hip-hop away from the glorification of vices and back to an intelligent examination of cultural and racial issues. In this concert, they are joined by the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the eight-piece Chicago-based rap and instrumental group, seven of which are sons of the trumpeter Phil Cohran. Director Nicolas Micha opens the film with a drone shot, zooming over a cliff edge and looking onto the stage hundreds of meters below. We can hear the DJ spinning discs and before long we enter onto the blue-tinted arena, with the crowd bouncing in anticipation. Black Star strut on, spouting intermingled bars and connecting with the audience through gestured punctuations. Then the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble enter, dressed all in white, working themselves into a dynamic formation on stage. After an hour of shifting groove, from laid-back fluidity to razor-sharp focus, covering all manner of political, spiritual and cultural topics, they bring the show to a slow-burning end.
