Summary:
Italian pianist Antonio Faraò puts on a powerhouse virtuosic performance on the keys in this nearly two-hour show in 2018 at the Moods jazz club in Zurich. Switzerland. He’s speedy, muscular, robust, wild in his extended melodic improvisations in the quartet setting that features as guest the brilliant harmonica star Grégoire Maret. He soars on his harp with solos and accompaniment that sways and thrusts. He works in sync with the leader. Born in Rome in 1965, Faraò jettisoned into the upper echelons of jazz steadily. At 22, he was awarded the New Talent Prize at the X1Music Review which a few years later honored him with Top Talent award. But it was his winning the Concours Martial Solal competition in Paris in 1998 that brought international attention for his Mediterranean-flavored straight-ahead jazz played with swinging grace and conviction. After recording for such labels as Enja, Cam Records and Universal Verve in Italy, he recorded for Warner the 2017 album Eklektik that featured an eclectic group comprising Snoop Dog, Marcus Miller, Didier Lockwood and Manu Kataché. This set at Moods in the following year finds Faraò returning to his inventive swing and joy of hard rhythm. Dan Ouellette
