- Summary:
- Directed by Giuseppe de Vecchi, the documentary Retrouver l'été - Jazz Summer Tour 2021 lucidly evokes the impact of the Covid 19 epidemic on recent French festivals. Various events are reviewed and confirm the gradual recovery of scenic activity. Jazz à Porquerolles presents saxophonist Archie Shepp in trio with Marion Rampal and Pierre-François Blanchard; Antibes-Juan-les-Pins unveils the charismatic Maria Mazzotta and Pulcinella during a set dedicated to the tarantella; and the musical programming of Sète is illustrated by the solos of the Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen. However, the interest of this film lies mainly in the testimonials collected and in the resulting panorama. Creator of remarkable films (*People Django* on gypsy jazz or *Le Moine et la Sirène* about Charles Lloyd), Giuseppe de Vecchi questions the organizers, technicians, and musicians on the economic and human repercussions of the first two confinements. Present this summer at the Millau en Jazz festival, the immense Ray Lema shares his insights on the role of culture and its inherent social bond, before commenting on the action of essential elements such as festival volunteers or even nursing staff. … Highly recommended.
