Summary:
South Africa is a musical blessing. We might think, for example, of Dollar Brand aka Abdullah Ibrahim, one of the leading lights of local jazz, Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, representatives of the foundational mbaqanga, or Spoek Mathambo, the pioneer of the popular electro genres kwaito and amapiano. Signed by the independent Parisian label No Format, Urban Village encapsulates this multifaceted history; the album Udondolo and the accompanying documentary reflect a blend of artistic influences. Invited to play at the Jazz Sous Les Pommiers festival in 2022, the band from Soweto opens their set with an eloquent introduction. The singer's voice is imbued with lyricism, the rhythm is carefully constructed, and the guitar chords naturally evoke Zulu music and its incredible scansion. The following track embodies a complex cultural dimension. Complemented by a delicate flute, the song hits its stride with the addition of a powerful choir. The final track marks another change in atmosphere with an undeniably cheerful mood. Carried by a twisting melody, this composition alone sums up the band's musical production and their penchant for assimilating diverse influences into their music. Vincent Caffiaux
