Summary:
The Juneteenth commemoration refers to June 19th 1865, when various slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed by the army that they were now free, a response to the Emancipation Proclamation issued two years earlier by Abraham Lincoln. This episode symbolized a foundation for the civil rights movement: it clearly announced the end of slavery on American soil. Now a public holiday in the United States, this date synonymous with emancipation did more than celebrate a simple date on the calendar. Above all, it enables the African-American population to confront a history marked by the infamous trade in human beings and to understand the political struggles that ensued. Presented by rapper Chen Lo and multi-instrumentalist Asante Amin, two members of the New York multimedia collective Soul Science Lab, the documentary Rhythms Of Liberation - A Soulful Juneteenth Tribute deftly sums up this event. Punctuated by archive footage, concert excerpts and interviews, this video focuses on the duty to remember and the transmission of knowledge. Dramatic periods such as enslavement on agricultural estates and the American Civil War are reviewed, as are gospel, funk and rap tracks performed with brio by Soul Science Lab, and an interesting interview with Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of the famous activist Malcolm X. Enriched by numerous commentaries, this film focuses on resilience and, in essence, offers innovative perspectives on the African-American community within the local cultural mosaic. Highly recommended... Vincent Caffiaux
