- Summary:
- He might not have known it yet, but by the time he launched Nucleus, Ian Carr had already made his mark on the history of English jazz for decades to come through his association with Don Rendell. Co-leaders in a quintet, the trumpeter and saxophonist went through the 1960s with eight records that would, over time, became classics. Must-listen tracks include "Blue Mosque" (in *Shades of Blue*) and "Pavanne" (in *Live*), undeniably their two masterpieces. In 1969, Ian Carr left the classicism of the quintet for the innovations of jazz rock, psychedelia and funk fusion with Nucleus, his new home. With a Fender Rhodes keyboard, electric bass and a new groove, the British band would go on to impress, even within the Village Vanguard – nothing less than New York's jazz temple. Here they are in Belgium, in a RTBF show dedicated to rock and pop: the Pop Shop! Florent Servia
