- Summary:
- Directed by Don Was, bassist of Was (Not Was) and side producer, the jazz label Blue Note today is a crossroad between quality reissues and often daring signings. Key player in this catalog, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is above all a revelation of a generation open to the four winds, capable of playing with a major player like Michel Portal and then appearing alongside a rapper like Kendrick Lamar. Facing the camera of Qwest TV, the Californian composer comments on his first contact with music through churches (a cultural melting pot for many African-American artists), listening to pianists. And he describes his theme for spinning the perfect cotton through silence, a dreamlike element coupled with an indivisible musical punctuation. However, Ambrose Akinmusire's answers do not stop at the religious framework or the mapping of the heart. Illustrated by relevant references, his remarks about the ideal album focus in particular on the LP Both Sides Now by the very popular Joni Mitchell. The soundtrack for troubled times is symbolized by Crescent, the heartbreaking recording by John Coltrane. And creators like drummer Elvin Jones and singer Björk are an integral part of his musical Hall of Fame. Recommended! Vincent Caffiaux
