- Summary:
- Although he has excelled as a solo pianist in the past decade, Tigran Hamasyan has always led interesting bands, and this sharply drilled international group featuring an American rhythm section and his compatriot Areni Agbabian is on good form here. This engaging performance features music from Tigran’s acclaimed 2013 album Shadow Theater, a set that saw him draw on Armenian folk and American jazz to create original music that was lyrical and rhythmically intricate. The undulating phrases, in which Tigran’s keyboards are doubled by his own vocals and Agbabian’s strong, sultry tone, are a distinctive feature of the arrangements, while the incisive solos taken by saxophonist Ben Wendel are also noteworthy. At times the band vaguely brings to mind the first incarnation of Chick Corea’s trailblazing early ‘70s fusion heroes Return To Forever, yet the music has a strength of character of its own.
