- Summary:
- Latin rhythms had a clear impact on African music during the independence period. Popularized throughout the continent, Congolese rumba influenced artists of the caliber of Grand Kallé (known for his track “Indépendance Cha Cha”) and Franco Luambo. Senegal, another country with a penchant for this style, has raised its status with artists like the incredible Laba Sosseh, the lively Africando and the fascinating Orchestra Baobab. Orchestra Baobab emerged from the eponymous club in Dakar in the 1970s with their subtle blending of Wolof traditions, jazz and brassy riffs, before being rediscovered in the early 2000s thanks to the British label World Circuit. Performing at Studio Le Claque, a Parisian venue renowned for its vintage keyboards, the African group kicks the show off with “Irala,” and everything else falls seamlessly into place: the saxophone melody, the heady percussion and the remarkably melodic vocals. The delivery of “Nijaay” is particularly captivating, a track penned by one of the group’s historic leaders Abdoulaye Mboup. Used as the opening track on their recent album Made In Dakar, this song is a clear testament to the incredible voices of this part of the continent. Finally, the upbeat “Bul Ma Miin” brings this Analogue session to a nostalgic close - an elegant musical creation accentuated by a rhythm guitar with a delightfully old-fashioned sound. Vincent Caffiaux. Tracks: 1. Bul Ma Miin 2. Nijaay 3. Irala. An original and exclusive series produced by Qwest TV and taped by Le Claque Studio (Paris, France) in December 2023.
