Summary:
First brought to the attention of the rest of the world by producer Francis Falceto, Ethio-jazz continues to fascinate. From the Mozart of pop Elvis Costello to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and British collective The Heliocentrics, numerous creators have succumbed to tezeta and the melancholic sound so particular to the Horn of Africa. First prize winner at the Conservatoire and member of the Orchestre National de Jazz, violinist Théo Ceccaldi confirms his passion for regional music genres with Kutu, an electronic project that mixes well-renowned Ethiopian songs with improvised registers in an audacious approach. Performing in Coutances, France in Spring 2023, as part of the Jazz Sous Les Pommiers festival, Kutu covers “Baamet Beal” – a single played over 500,000 times on the internet, and all in less than two months. Accompanied by big names including drummer Cyril Atef and sublime Mauritanian singer Noura Mint Seymali, Théo Ceccaldi sets the tone with “Dantada,” a tune drawn from the powerful “Guramayle”; captivates the audience with “Beka,” whose melody is electrified by the charismatic Hewan Gebrewold; and evokes an indescribable trance with “Seth,” a second non-album track. Recalling the music of Ester Rada and Gili Yalo, two singers from the Ethiopian community Beta Israel, Kutu reinvents traditions with brilliance: we can’t wait to hear more… Vincent Caffiaux
