- Summary:
- When he took the stage at the Jazz à la Villette festival in 2014, Roberto Fonseca began by lighting candles to the sound of his song "Fragmento de Misa" in order to summon the orishas. The Afro-Cuban divinities then watched over his solo, an exercise to which the pianist hadn't been accustomed. An heir to Chucho Valdés, he’s nevertheless capable of shaping landscapes reminiscent of Keith Jarret, in Santa Ola, playing a concert made up of his own compositions, as well as the María Teresa Vera standard "Veinte años." Surrounded by a piano, a Fender Rhodes and a Hammond organ, which he plays alternately or simultaneously, Fonseca (once joined onstage by bassist Damian Francisco Nueva) combines virtuosity and feeling, emanating the very spirit of Cuban jazz. Like it says on the posters he brandishes to the public: Welcome to my home. Would you like to come in? Eric Delhaye
