- Summary:
- From the very first notes of "Yes I’m Country (And That’s OK)" from his album *Double-Booked*, released a year earlier, Robert Glasper’s playfulness is evident. Throughout this Parisian soirée, the American pianist increases the number of held notes, winks and small asides to tantalize the other members of his trio: rock-solid bassist Derrick Hodge and gifted drummer Chris Dave, all sweat and concentration under his "Undefeated" cap. It’s as though the Houston native never felt better in his tennies, happy to show his two sonic sides — jazz and R&B — in the same concert. And even his friend Bilal — high-strung, hypersensitive soul crooner — plays this beautiful duality game with an intense reinterpretation of Bobby Hutcherson’s Little B Poem and a Dantesque version of his Grammy-nominated hymn All Mater, lasting more than 10 minutes.
