- Summary:
- Do you like your jazz versatile and racy? If you have never had the chance to see Tigran Hamasyan in concert, logic would dictate that you click without further delay on this video from the 2021 Jazz à Vienne festival. Here is a young Armenian pianist with all the qualities of a prodigy and the composer who should logically figure for a long time in the jazz hall of fame of the beginning of the 21st century. Due to his Armenian origins and the strong musical culture of his people (Armenia is geographically at the crossroads of a set of influences almost without equal), his approach is radically different from other pianists of his generation, for which the “North American” stylistic school remains the major reference. Captured in a trio, you will discover a modern and volatile instrumentalist, whimsical and twirling, going happily from compositions directly inspired by the traditional music of his Armenian peers to furious and impressive Monkian deconstructions/reconstructions. In a nomadic or chameleon spirit, he even ventures (sparingly) to a form of ambient music during this summer performance in the magnificent setting of the ancient theater of Vienne. A trio format that suits him like a glove (piano/bass/drums), a discreet, relaxed character, far from being academic or borrowing from a form of pretension that we sometimes find in great instrumentalists. No, this Tigran has been emulated and already influences, even though only in his thirties, a number of young artists. Naturalness and style in the service of original and accessible music, that's all we wish for in Jazz today...and tomorrow. Julien D
