Summary:
Often compared to D’Angelo, Bilal was Kendrick Lamar’s accomplice on "To Pimp A Butterfly," and his status in the industry has led him to collaborate with Dr. Dre, The Roots, D’Angelo, Pharrell Williams, Beyonce, and Jay-Z for the last twenty years. Bilal made his name through the sensual and groovy "Soul Sista," but there are many who think he still hasn’t been given the respect he deserves. Bilal, an underappreciated genius, appears on stage in 2000 alongside Guru. He is 21 years old here and his presence that night will always be remembered by those who were there. Educated in classical music, Bilal learned to sing opera and has always had a jazz fascination. His voice is recognizable, and his falsetto is his trademark. On this night he showed us a new facet of his personality, moving from a deep, husky voice to a soft, high-pitched tone. He refuses to be categorized and considers his music to be hip-hop hybrid. The groove is sensual, sometimes grungy, and tinged with a funk bass. Bilal charms us with his voice, his confidence, and even if he hasn’t yet had the success he deserves, he will always have our ultimate respect. Anaïs Christidis Guillemard
