- Summary:
- By their glowing introductions to each other, it is easy to feel the chemistry shared by Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez. Both from Havana, Cuba, but well established in the US, this piano-percussion duo caught the attention of Quincy Jones, who went on to produce their debut album, Duologue, for an early 2019 release. The record, as well as every aspect of this performance, demonstrates how playfulness plays as much a part as virtuosity when it comes to their appeal. They have fun with the audience, and with each other, nodding and glancing over from their instruments whilst in mid-flow. Their tracks, which range from original compositions, to Yoruba pieces (in honor of the African diaspora that settled in Cuba), to interpretations of the Super Mario theme tune, give this same sense of mastery and intricacy, mixed with a touch of humor. For fans, this performance is interesting because of the amount of singing, something not too present in their recordings – especially from Pedrito, who possesses a rare vocal power. Throughout, both piano and percussion can be considered equally melodic and percussive, as if that distinction had never existed in the first place. Rowan Standish Hayes
