- Summary:
- Beyond the image of the blind one-man band who played three reed instruments at the same time and mastered others, sometimes little-known instruments such as the manzello or the stritch, there is the artist, an unclassifiable musician. Here, Roland Kirk evades classification, concocting a jubilant synthesis that amazes the audience. After his death in 1977, the voice of a certain jazz, both learned and popular, evaporated. He had attached the qualifier "Rahsaan" to his name, taking on a new incarnation that corresponded to the qualities he lent himself: uprightness, activity, humor, strength and nobility. He also never lacked humor, sincerity or a certain comportment that was bathed in spirituality. He sought above all to model sound matter and to create bewitching atmospheres with heady melodies. Assisted by the Vibration Society – musicians who were accomplices, between sound gags and proven melodic sense, imperious swing and the raucity of the blues – he spanned all repertoires from the most traditional to the most avant-garde. With Rashaad, jazz was still a carnal spectacle. Philippe Lesage
