Recorded in the fall of '68 at the Salle Pleyel, this concert by Ray Charles is brimming over in what was an already accomplished career. Supported by a large orchestra complete with lecterns and virtuoso soloists, the Genius begins with the overwhelming "The Sun Died” - a song that will be popularised in France by Nicoletta. He then takes on "Yesterday", a cover that reminds us of the attraction the Fab Four repertoire has for rhythm and blues stars (Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, to name just a few…). Joined by the Raelettes, his female backing choir created according to the same principle as Ike & Tina Turner’s Ikettes, Ray drives in the nail with a soulful interpretation of the standard "My Funny Valentine". Then arrives on the stage the Supreme Susaye Greene, with whom the pianist develops a dramatic tête-à-tête that is subtle to say the least! A showcase for the vocalist, who reaches here the summits of grace. Finally bringing this tour de force of showmanship to a close with a take on Ray’s 1959 hit, “What'd I Say”, which shines with its groovy piano, thermonuclear brass and possessed vocals.
