Summary:
Few young trumpeters experience as much hype as Avishaï Cohen did on his come up. He started early – beginning to perform in public at the age of ten and touring with the Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under master conductors like Zubin Mehta. Cohen’s journey then took him to Berklee on a scholarship, and to third place in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition. But he truly came of age in Smalls club, in New York’s West Village, having taken a route well-travelled by Israeli jazzmen. But in recent years Cohen has been travelling in his own lane – it is one of the aspects that keeps his star rising (for four years running he has been voted a Rising Star-Trumpet in the DownBeat Critics Poll). A consistently creative player-composer, he combines multiple threads in his quartet and trio. Yet it’s as part of his electric project, Big Vicious, that he pushes the boat out furthest. Flanked by two guitarists and two drummers, he blends rock, psychedelia, avant-garde, groove and, of course, jazz. Here, in a performance in the summer of 2019, the result is captivating.
