Summary:
Milt Jackson, the founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet has crossed paths with Ray Brown many times in a long-lasting collaboration that bears witness to the imperishability of bebop and to a certain classic musical elegance. The long introductions that Milt Jackson delivers, in all their jubilant variations, almost become a game for the listener who is free to indulge in the pleasure of imperishable standards as they are being recited. It is a rhythmic dream that combines the delicate piano of Cedar Walton, Mickey Roker’s drums and the phenomenal Ray Brown, a distinguished figure in double-bass swing. On an instrument now too often neglected, the vibraphonist underlines the beauty of ballads that he has always loved in a way that makes it look easy. With the saxophonist Stanley Turrentine acting as a guest, the wisdom, the nobility and the brazenness of the great masters is on full display. Timeless. Philippe Lesage
