Summary:
Bassist Avishai Cohen was part of the first wave of Israeli musicians to impact the jazz scene of New York back in the 1990s, soon tapped by legendary pianist Chick Corea to anchor his Origin band for several years. In 2007, Cohen paid it forward when he recruited his younger compatriot, then-19-year-old pianist Shai Maestro, to join his trio with longtime drummer Mark Guiliana. Their first of four albums through 2010 was Gently Disturbed for the New York-based Sunnyside label. Ten years after its release, Cohen reunited with Maestro to celebrate the anniversary of that first session, playing 9 of its 11 pieces, nearly in the same order, most composed by Cohen, two in collaboration with Maestro and Guiliana, plus two traditional Sephardic love songs, one featuring Cohen’s vocal. In for Guiliana is Cohen’s childhood friend Noam David. The trio recalls the magical interplay of Corea’s 1968 Now He Sings, Now He Sobs album. The two songs opening the concert demonstrate distinct facets of the group, with “Seattle” lyrical, delicate and probing and “Chutzpah” brasher and more percolating. Cohen’s pleasure in witnessing Maestro’s growth is palpable throughout the concert with their deep communication. The same is evident with Cohen and David, the latter never playing more than the music needs to keep moving forward. The concert closes with two Cohen pieces not from the album, “Remembering” and “Alon Basela”, the latter with Cohen singing and exhorting the crowd to clap along in a raucous finale. Andrey Henkin
