Summary:
If Biréli Lagrène is present in several programs offered by the Qwest website (a tribute to Django Reinhardt in 1987, in duet with Babik Reinhardt, a Gipsy Project concert at the New Morning in 2004), it is because he has become one of the essential guitarists in the musical sphere. He remains one of the essential voices of gypsy music and was also the partner of some of the greatest musicians of the genre (Al di Meola, Paco de Lucia, John Mclaughlin, and Jaco Pastorius who was his friend, not to mention the French Sylvain Luc). Filmed at Studio Sextan as part of the Pause project, which invites artists to share their universe in this period when time is suspended or even distorted, Biréli Lagrène shares a moment of pure intimacy. Faced with the bareness of the studio, the beauty of the bronze lighting, and the ambient silence - the images bear witness to it - it is a nakedness that prohibits ease that the solitary artist faces. In four short periods of pure improvisation, without any explicit gypsy breathing, the guitarist distils a program that takes us through several colors; here and there some melodic sketches, elsewhere melancholy accents before the tension mounts at the end towards more rock scansions which remind us of his past in jazz fusion: a performance that sounds like a synthesis of his art.
