Summary:
To relaunch the Pee Wee label, whose name is now followed by an exclamation point, in this pandemic period where time is suspended, modified, and distorted, the Pause program offered a few artists the opportunity to share a moment of pure intimacy, as if giving themselves the luxury of taking a break. Filmed at the Sextan studio, in golden-hued lighting designed by François Yvernat, a context that is both warm and intimidating, pianist Sophia Domancich takes the opportunity to embroider around a few compositions from her new album: Le Grand Jour (The Big Day). These compositions are titled: "Les arbres somnambules" (The somnambulist trees), "Un flamand rose sur le piano" (A pink flamingo on the piano), "Une idée claire" (A clear idea), "Chanson pour Eliott" (Song for Eliott), as well as "Django", one of the major compositions of John Lewis, the founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet. It is not surprising to find here the signature of John Lewis whose sobriety of writing and playing matches the aesthetic defended by Sophia Domancich. In the filigree of this short performance there is a whole history of piano and jazz, which goes from bop to figures of the Canterbury School (Robert Wyatt, John Greaves, Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper were fellow travelers), passing through energetic bursts of free music. You have to follow the artist's thoughts by letting yourself be immersed in the poetry of sound; as in a long stroll where abstraction mingles with lyricism.
