- Summary:
- B.B. King's two-part performance, captured during the golden age at an emblematic festival of the French Riviera (La Grande Parade du Jazz, with its bucolic setting and postcard appeal), has the wonderful grainy look that marks the best testimonials the blues star has left us. At 54 years young, ten years after having published “The Thrill Is Gone,” a track which propelled the already long career of the guitarist to stratospheric success, BB King shows all the dimensions of his art in an extended format. 300% blues, of course, but full of the nuances that the Mississippi native used to build his musical identity. In all elegance (as much in clothing as in music), compositions like "Hour Blue," "Same Old Story" and "Night Life" flirt with jazz, soul and rhythm & blues at will, all the way up to the shades of pop of which also formed part of his sound. We might suspect that this full orchestra (XL brass section including trumpet player C. Owen, whom he loved so much), could drown the nuance and make his famous Lucille less flamboyant than in a small group. But in truth, the freedom conferred by this live performance reminds us that BB always bore his nickname, the master was here, as he was everywhere, as a king incarnate. Julien D.
