- Summary:
- High-energy electro-funk duo Chromeo scorches out a pop fluidity that’s fist pumping, up jumping, hand clapping, backbeat thumping. Self-proclaimed Funk Lordz, Chromeo was formed in 2002 in Montreal by guitarist/lead vocalist David Macklovitch (aka Dave1) and keyboardist/electric bassist/vocalist Patrick Gemayel (aka P-Thugg) who had been jamming together in the dance-rock-funk zone since they were both 15. It’s a Jewish-Arab partnership that has packed houses with its infectious funk and catchy guitar riffs. Case in point: its feature billing at the 2018 Pitchfork Music Festival Paris at the Grande Halle de la Villette cultural center. With a recorded rhythm track to boost the zeal, Dave1 opened the flashing-light show with a riveting guitar hammer on the funky "Count Me Out," then cooked up a party by teaching the crowd the chorus of "Must’ve Been" and dubbed the singers the Paris Orchestra Choir. With his keyboards mounted on mannequin lady legs, P-Thugg joined in on vocals with Dave1 by using his Talk Box that transforms his voice into robotic sounds. In addition to keeping the groove going on the keys, he also strapped on his electric bass to push out the dancehall vibe that closed with the vibrant song about a cheating girl, "Jealous (I Ain’t Without It)."
