Folger MS V.a.166 comprises two biographies: one of Constance, Lady Lucy, by her daughter-in-law Elizabeth (pp.1-24), the second of Elizabeth Lucy by her daughter Martha Eyre (pp.25-38). The life of 'Constance Lucy' is addressed both in the title (p.1) and in a marginal note (p.10) to a friend, Mrs Moore (so far unidentified). The emphasis in each biography is on the piety of the Lucy's women's lives and especially their deaths.No date is given for the composition or transcription of either part of the manuscript, but the composition of Elizabeth Lucy's life of Constance can be dated to before February 1690/1, the probable date of Elizabeth's death, and the transcription of the whole to a period after December 1694, when Thomas Tenison, described in the manuscript as 'Doctor Tenison, since Arch Bishop of Canterbury' was appointed to the archbishopric.In the nineteenth century, the manuscript was lent to the antiquarian Joseph Hunter by the Deputy Recorder of Salisbury, Robert Benson. Hunter's account of the manuscript can be found in British Library MS 24, 475, fol.56.
