Elizabeth, Lady Petty's diary is one item within a composite volume described by the British Library Lansdowne catalogue as 'Papers relating to Trade'. Many of the these papers appear to have been produced either by or for Sir William Petty, and several are specifically related to Ireland. Lady Petty's diary appears to belong with the immediately preceding item (fols. 26-30), in William Petty's hand, which is entitled 'Directions to my deare Wife whom God direct & preserve', and is dated 15 April 1675 on fol. 26r and 22 April 1675 on fols. 29r and 31 r-v. In this document, William Petty provides instructions and advice as to how his wife should manage her forthcoming visit to Ireland. Its principal concerns are with the details of how she should travel, and with how she should deal with their family, employees and tenants in the south-west of the island. Elizabeth Petty's diary (fols. 32r-36r) recounts her travels and transactions in Limerick, Cork and Kerry between 7 June and mid-July 1675. Throughout she is concerned principally with the business matters which appear to have occasioned her journey; the few references to her brothers and cousin often refer to their financial dealings with the Pettys. Each entry is dated in the left margin. Her entries are written as if at most a few days after the event. She provides detailed accounts of her financial dealings, specifying by name the numerous people she has interviewed, the properties affected by their discussions, and the sums of money involved. At several points she transcribes into her document the written agreements she has reached with the Pettys' tenants or employees. Significant names of people and places are recorded in the left margin
