The recently-married John Smith (junior) inherits his father's business, and contracts syphilis after an encounter with a former partner. A specialist and a doctor at an Ante-Natal Clinic warns that Smith and his pregnant wife must both attend hospital for treatment, but neither do. Both Mrs Smith and their child become seriously ill, and their child loses the sight in one eye, which four years later results in a fatal accident involving a truck; the Smiths are also left unable to have further children.
