Summary:
The small and medium enterprise (SME) of Chopwood Mercantile (Colorado, United States) was the first outdoor retail store to become a Certified Benefit Corporation (B Corp) in 2016. None of their larger competitors, such as Academy Sports + Outdoors, Bass Pro Shop, or Recreation Equipment Inc. (REI), had acquired the certification. The owners of this small enterprise had invested a substantial amount of their scarce resources into the certification process, obtaining a sufficient "B Impact Score" (a measure of the positive impacts made on their community, environment, and other stakeholders, measured by the third-party organization B Lab). Chopwood Mercantile experienced financial growth and loss during the time they were certified. However, it was unclear why this was the case. Two years later, in August of 2018, the company needed to recertify, and they had a hard decision to make around where they invested resources. The owners, Underwood and Cramton, deliberated over the value of the certification and weighed their options. Should they allow the certification to lapse or renew? What other options did they have to continue to create benefits for their community and society?
